Cal State Bakersfield at Stanford, 22 December 2011

Baranduin Briggs

Baranduin took a long, late lunch break to take 28 shots she posted to a Smugmug gallery, with Santa and Bonnie and Jos but also this of Sara James, who had a rockin' game:

Scott Uyeno

Scott posted a bunch of shots to a Flickr set with lots of north-end action including this one of Joslyn going for a block:

David Cortesi

We posted 18 pics to a Smugmug gallery with Santa, Sara, Nneka, and a nice head-shot of Erica, who ran the point for several minutes:

Posted from SJC while waiting to board a flight to Seattle! See you next year!

Tennessee at Stanford, 20 December 2011

Scott Uyeno

Scott posts 34 action shots to his Flickr stream with lots of close action under the North basket, including this of Toni getting fouled on a drive:

Diane Roberts

New contributor Diane shot from the SE corner and posted 46 pics to a Smugmug Gallery, portraying well the ambience of a sold-out game. Some game action, too, but one of her best action shots is of the Showtime Dunkteam arial act at half-time:

Baranduin Briggs

Baranduin posts 45 shots to her Smugmug gallery including so many great actions shots of Nneka (of course), Chiney, Bonnie, Jos, that it was hard to pick one to feature, but by an eyelash it has to be...

Also, Baranduin caught the group-circle formed by both teams after the game. This is something Stanford only does with Tennessee, so far as I know, and it's a nice moment:

Michael Li

Michael says he didn't take a lot of shots because, "As a fan photographer, fan comes first." But he did post a few shots to a Flickr set, including one he says "more or less sums up how things went for the Lady Vols"--

and more...?

Anybody else?

Princeton at Stanford, 17 December 2011

Baranduin Briggs

Baranduin couldn't get away from work until 1, and only arrived at Maples for the second half. Just the same she posted 27 shots, mostly action, to Smugmug. Here's one example among many:

Scott Uyeno

Scott shot as usual from high in the North end and posted 25 pics to a Flickr gallery including this of Jos and Erica going for a rebound:

Michael Li

Michael posts only a few shots to his Flickr set including some nice action of Toni and of Bonnie, but the one that jumps out of his collection yelling "feature me! feature me!" is this gorgeous portrait of Ros G.O.

David Cortesi

We posted 18 shots to our Smugmug gallery including pics of alumnae Anita Kaplan and Milena Flores, Jasmine Camp talking to the FBC, and the latest Borchardt baby, but also this showing one way to keep Nneka from scoring:

P.S. Deb Gumbly got a great shot of a very similar foul (same action, different Princeton player), see this from her gallery!

Stanford at Fresno State, 4 December 2011

Baranduin Briggs

Baranduin reports, "My camera falls under the category of 'professional' cameras, which weren't allowed inside Save Mart Arena, so I didn't even try to get the 70-200 or even the shorter 105 back up lens in. I just went for the 50mm... and sat real close. The lighting seemed about as bad as Maples. But I think I got a few reasonably good shots." Check her out at Smugmug.

Uh, yeah, those look alright, Briggs. One excellent addition to the "Elbows" series, look for it, and several good action snaps of the Sisterhood of O, like this,

And, let's give the bench some love: Grace Mashore:

David Cortesi

We trucked right past the guards with a big ol' zoom but didn't do much with it, only a few worth posting to our Smugmug gallery including Sarah Boothe showing how the Cardinal out-rebounded the Bulldogs 2:1.

UC Davis at Stanford, 30 November 2011

Scott Uyeno

Scott posts 24 shots to his Flickr set where along with action shots of Nneka, Chiney, and Erica, he caught this of Joslyn Tinkle working on her career night:

Baranduin Briggs

Baranduin writes that this was "a bit of a rough game for me—I am a 2nd generation UCD graduate." But she posted 32 pics to her Smugmug gallery with action shots of Chiney, Erica, Bonnie, Toni, but this absolutely classic Nneka rebound:

Michael Li

Michael posts 12 shots to a Flickr Set including action of Joslyn and Toni, a nice head shot of Sara, and this which he captions, "Sara James and the hunchback of UC Davis."

Dave Cortesi

We posted 24 pics to our Smugmug gallery, including nice head shots of several players from warm-ups. But there were open courtside seats and we "occupied" one during the first half and got some actual action shots for once including this one of Joslyn surprising an Aggie defender:

ODU at Stanford, 17 November 2011

Michael Li

Michael had a problem with disappearing files but came in late with a dozen shots on Flickr, with action by Toni, Lindy, Joslyn and this of Bonnie Samuelson driving past a "moving screen"—so to speak.

Baranduin Briggs

Baranduin posts 29 shots from her new South-east side position to her Smugmug gallery, with action of Joslyn, Jasmine, Tony, and this of Nneka absorbing a rebound:

Scott Uyeno

Scott uploaded 40 photos to a Flickr gallery with lots of action featuring Amber, Joslyn, and Alex Green (looking amazingly like Mel Murphy) but we have to feature this perfect capture of Nneka attempting a block:

David Cortesi

We uploaded 19 shots to our Smugmug gallery including stock (portrait) shots of Susan King Borchardt, Sarah Booth, and Don Gustafson, and a bit of action including this of Jasmine Camp on defense:

Gonzaga at Stanford, 13 November 2011

Scott Uyeno

Scott posts 28 photos from his North-end perch to his Flickr gallery. Along with action shots of Chiney, Lindy, Amber—just about everyone, really—he caught Sarah Boothe's authoritative block of Kelley Bowen:

Baranduin Briggs

Working from her new seat in the South-East corner Baranduin posts 42 shots to her Smugmug gallery. She caught nice portraits of the '92 championshop team players and plenty of action, including the instant when Nneka faked a pass to baffle a Gonzaga defender, and three consecutive shots of the moment when Nneka, falling down, hurled the ball up and it went in, one picture on either side of this one:

Michael Li

Michael says he's "still adjusting to a new lens and a new seat" but posted eight pics to a Flickr set including Chiney in a crowd, Toni launching a three, and this of a Toni layup:

Dave Cortesi

Working from low down mid-court, we don't get the great action shots, but we put 18 decent pictures in our Smugmug gallery, including stock shots of Betty Ann Boeving, two more in the "Elbows" series, and ending with some nice portraits of Taylor Greenfield at the post-game talk, including this smile:

Stanford at Texas, 11 November 2011

Dave Cortesi

We had fabulous seats, right behind the bench—thank you Janet!— and put some pictures in our Smugmug gallery including this of Tara lecturing:

Tara's demeanor was impressive; at every time-out she was clearly teaching or explaining, emphatically but not angrily.

More?

Jim Davis was there and may come up with a few shots from higher up, check back in a day or so.

Kelley L. Cox Shoots the FBC!

Pro photog Kelley, after giving the fan photogs advice before the game, came to the UCSD game and took a few shots that she's posted to her blog. Besides several polished shots like the one of Chiney Ogwumike, below, her collection also includes pictures of every fan photographer she could see from the floor! Did she find you? Click through and scroll down to find out!

Scott Uyeno

Scott posts 19 pics to his flickr photoset including good action shots of Joslyn, Sara, Sarah, Lindy, and this of Nneka and Amber on defense:

Baranduin Briggs

Baranduin posts 31 shots to her Smugmug gallery, with action shots of Sara, Joslyn (great rebound grab), Amber, and Alex, but the one that caught our eye was this:

More?

Check back later for more pictures.

UCSD at Stanford—More! 02 Nov 2011

Michael Li

Michael sensibly didn't sit up late and send his pics along at midnight, waiting for the next day to post ten pics to his flickr set including the tip-off, Toni shooting a free-throw, and this of fresher Jasmine Camp skirting the sideline:

Lindy Stankov

Welcome first-time contributor Lindy! Who dropped 9 pics shot from a floor-level seat, it appears, into a flickr photostream. The set includes shots of Jasmine Camp, of a sweeper wearing a PAC-12 shirt, and this one of frosh Taylor Greenfield on defense:

UCSD at Stanford, 2 November 2011

Scott Uyeno

Scott posted 16 shots to his Flickr set, including good action shots of Sarah Boothe, Joslyn Tinkle, and this one of fresher Erica Payne on defense:

At Kelley Cox's pregame photo seminar we learned about how your camera can unfortunately pick the wrong subject for autofocus, and this is an example: Erica's juuuuust a bit soft and the UCSD player is sharp—but it's a good shot anyway.

Baranduin Briggs

Baranduin posted to Smugmug, including team interactions, action shots of the Ogwumike sisters doing their usual incredible things, and this of fresher Amber Orrange driving:

David Cortesi

We uploaded 7 shots to a Smugmug gallery, with pics of Boothe and James on defense, some fans, and this one of Erica Payne waiting for play to resume:

More??

About 20 people turned up for Kelley Cox's very interesting talk, so maybe we'll get pictures from more lenses soon. If so we'll do a new blog post for this game.

Open Practice, 21 October 2011

Photo Seminar Before First Game!

If you have ever tried to take pictures inside Maples, even just for your own use, you'll want to come a little early to the first exhibition game, Wednesday November 2. At 5:45 in Kissick auditorium we'll have a presentation by a pro sports photographer on how to take good pictures from your seat. See our previous post for details.

Meanwhile, some pics were taken at the open practice last week! If you are new to this blog, remember, we only post a few pictures here as teasers. Click through to each photographer's gallery page for more, more, more!

Michael Li

Michael came early and snagged a seat in what is usually the VIP section, and posted some pics to his flickr set including this of the early warmups:

Baranduin Briggs

Baranduin posted in her new smugmug gallery including this tip-off of one of the scrimmage games:

David Cortesi

We put a few shots in our smugmug gallery including some nice head shots of the freshmen when Tara was introducing them at the dinner. Here's Alex Green, for instance.

Action photo seminar to start new season!

Stanford Women's basketball starts Wednesday night, November 2nd, bringing us a new season and new faces to capture. To start us off we are privileged to present Kelley L. Cox with a seminar on Shooting From the Seats—Taking action photos with the camera you have from the seat you get.

Kelley L. Cox is a professional sports photographer (click through to learn all about her). She shoots professional and amateur sports all around the Bay Area, but has a special fondness for women's basketball in general and Stanford in particular. You might remember this shot of hers from last December:

Kelley will be presenting in Kissick Auditorium starting at 5:45 on Wednesday 11/2. We will wrap up in plenty of time for the 7pm game. Bring your camera and your questions!

Stanford at the Pro-Am, 25 June 2011

Baranduin Briggs

Baranduin "snuck out of the 'cleaning out the house' day and headed up to SF, dragging along a friend from Cincinnati," and posted 43 shots from the dimness of Kezar to Set To Continuous. Owing to limited bandwidth from our campground in Grand Tetons NP, we'll just post this nice shot of the action. Click through to the gallery for the rest!

Players in red, from left to right, Bonnie Samuelson, Taylor Greenfield, Jasmine Camp, Joslyn Tinkle, Amber Orrange.

Like the Blog? Get the Book!

All season this blog has showcased the amazing work of fan photographers. Now we have put our best shots into a 120-page book. Click that link to preview and optionally purchase a copy.

Called Tough and Together (the team's motto coming out of time-outs), the book features front and back covers designed by Deb Gumbley. Inside there is a special page featuring the team's and Tara's achievements, followed by a chapter for each player. The main attraction is one dazzling action shot after another as our cameras caught these amazing women in mid-flight again and again.

The book is only available on-line from the page linked above. It costs $32.95 in soft-cover, plus sales tax and shipping. The price is the minimum, and all goes to the publisher, Blurb.com; no money comes back to the photographers or the program.

Semi-Final, 3 April 2011

Baranduin Briggs

Well, the outcome was not what we wished for, but the pre-game festivities were quite nice. Baranduin posted pics of the send-off to set to continuous including a great shot of the team on the "BOMP" of All Right Now,

And, scrolling further down the gallery page, game pictures, including several shots of Nneka performing the near-impossible:

Dave Cortesi

We posted 26 pictures of the fans, band, and team at the send-off to our smugmug gallery including several like this of the team grooving to the band,

as well as a couple showing alumnae schmoozing at the arena, like this of four former players (how many did you see play?):

Saturday Before the Final Four, 2 April 2011

Baranduin Briggs

After getting home ("we didn't take a laptop on the trip") Baranduin posted some pics of the open practice session to set to continuous including one of Nneka and Chiney "helping" Bobbie do push-ups:

However, scroll further down her gallery page to find game pictures from the WBCA High-school All-American game, including pretty action shots of our incoming recruits Amber Orrange,

and Taylor Greenfield:

Dave Cortesi

We posted 14 pics of the doings at the arena on the day before the first games to smugmug including an overview of the arena,

and some shots of the players and coaches at the open practice and autograph session, and three pics of our incoming recruits, Greenfield and Orrange:

Don't adjust your monitor, the Fieldhouse floor was really that butter-yellow color! (It was part of the historic "Hoosiers" look.) Click through to the gallery for the rest.
