UConn at Stanford, 29 December 2012

Scott Uyeno

Scott posts 54 shots of the debacle to a flickr set including this of Chiney in the usual defensive crowd:

Or Jos being defended,

and a number of similar intense moments of action.

Michael Li

Michael posts a dozen shots to a flickr set including this one showing the defense was no softer in the second half:

Baranduin Briggs

Baranduin posts 61 shots to a smugmug gallery. She reports that on the way to the game she fell on her camera, making many of the controls inoperative, so all of the shots are monochrome. Still she managed to capture images like this from the second half, showing the defense UConn laid on Chiney the whole game:

Pacific at Stanford, 15 December 2012

Scott Uyeno

Scott posts 56 shots of North-end action to a Flickr set including this dynamic composition that nicely captures Erica Payne's defense:

(Note that Pacific's #4 is their high scorer normally; in this game she had zero, zip, bupkis.) Click through for many more including Erica looking for help, Jos getting fouled and later, fouling in return.

Baranduin Briggs

Baranduin posts 49 shots from the SE corner to this Smugmug gallery with lots of wild action, including this of Taylor at the start of the collision that took her out of the game:

Click through for lots more including Jasmine doing a header and Mikaela being rolled upon. Oh, and dogs!

Michael Li

Michael posts a small but choice group of action shots to a Flickr set featuring this one of Amber in trouble:

Is Amber rebounding or shooting? No matter, great shot.

Dave Cortesi

A polite red-vest rousted me from an unauthorized courtside seat (yeah, it's all his fault) so we posted just a few shots to a Smugmug gallery including this of Taylor's collision just a few milliseconds later than the above shot:

A few more where that came from including Mel Murphy.

Stanford at Gonzaga, 2 December 2012

Dave Cortesi

We have posted 15 shots to a smugmug gallery including this one of Taylor shooting the longest of her six three-pointers:

A bit of photo nerdery here (non-photographers just go on about your business...). We were traveling light for this quick weekend trip to the Inland Empire. Also we knew that our seats were in the top row of a sold-out arena. So I took only one lens, a 50mm f1.8. Not a zoom, a fixed focal length that, on a digital SLR, is a medium telephoto.

Because of the wide aperture I could shoot at 1/800th at ISO 200. But this was the full-frame field of view from our seats in row 32:

It made shooting pretty simple. No worries about composition. Just point the camera in the general direction of the basket, wait for something to happen, and click. Then rely on the camera having enough pixels that a decent composition can be cropped out of the full image afterward. Because of the low ISO setting, there isn't much noise in the images so even a tight crop is still a pretty clean picture.

Stanford at UC Davis, 30 November 2012

Dave Cortesi

Only one fanpiccer made the trip: yr. obt. svt. We posted 18 shots to a smugmug gallery of which the best had to be this one:

KIDDING! Unquestionably the best was this of Jos Tinkle getting one of her seven (!) blocks:

Long Beach State at Stanford, 25 November 2012

Scott Uyeno

Scott posts 48 shots a flickr set with lots of intense under-the-basket action like this of Chiney doing her thing:

plus perimeter shots:

Click through for lots more action with Taylor, Toni, Jos, Amber, Bonnie.

Baranduin Briggs

Real Life™ caused a delay in getting Baranduin's pics to their smugmug gallery—hey, nobody's paying us to do this, ya know—but they are up with lots of action. We'll tease with a couple of rebounds:

Check out pics #26-27, of Mikaela creatively getting out of trouble, and the sequence #7-8-9.

Dave Cortesi

We got almost no in-game shots this time, but posted pictures of Morgan Clyburn's pregame kids' clinic and Chiney's post-game talk to a smugmug gallery including this one of Morgan leading a defensive drill:

Hawaii and UTM, 17 and 18 November 2012

After the excitement of the Baylor game on Friday the following two games seemed somewhat routine. But we kept snapping pics, at a slower rate.

Hawai'i

For the game with the Rainbow Wahine, or "The 'bows" as their fans call them, Baranduin posts 49 shots to this smugmug gallery including a very characteristic Payne move:

How characteristic is it? Well, we posted a modest 7 shots to our smugmug gallery including:

That's not the same shot! The defending player is different in the two pictures.

University of Tennessee-Martin

This final game of the weekend was fairly intense and Baranduin caught a lot of good action in to be seen in this gallery. Here are two; click through for lots more:

We posted a few shots to a smugmug gallery with some action, and a few shots of the awards ceremony:

And so back to Maples, where possibly we'll get pictures from more of you?

Stanford v. Baylor, 16 November 2012

At least two fan photographers attended this game at the University of Hawaii to witness the biggest Cardinal win since beating UConn last year.

Baranduin Briggs

Baranduin positioned herself behind the Stanford bench and, despite being "too excited in the second half to focus" posted 80 shots to this smugmug gallery. The first-half shots in Baranduin's trademark monochrome portray the intensity of the Cardinal defense, as here:

...or here:

The second half yielded fewer action shots but she was well placed for the celebration at the end of the game:

Click through to the gallery for many more of high-intensity action, jubilation and a charming pre-game shot of Kate Paye.

Dave Cortesi

We posted 31 pics to a smugmug gallery including this of "Game Over!"

You may have seen these as the gallery link was included in Marian's story of the game. If not, click through to the gallery for game action, Dana leading cheers, and nice post-game portrait shots.

Stanford at Santa Clara, 11 November 2012

Baranduin Briggs

Baranduin shot from the south end of the cozy Leavey Center and put 51 shots in this smugmug galler, including a ton of terrific action shots. We'll tease with this one of a levitating E. Payne:

...and this of a flying T. Greenfield:

Michael Li

Michael shot from the east side, and posts to a flickr set including this one of Mikaela Ruef defending:

Click through for Toni levitating and other action.

David Cortesi

We shot from high up on the west side and posted 13 shots to a smugmug gallery including this one of Jos Tinkle taking advantage of not one, but two screeners:

Click through to the gallery for more levitators and Kiran's first college bucket.

Fresno State at Stanford, 9 November 2012

Scott Uyeno

Scott posts 52 shots to a flickr set. A number of his first-half shots from the south end show how tough the Bulldog defense was, as here:

(Yes, that's a foul, but the refs blew very few whistles in this game.) But in the second half he gets a look at Stanford defense:

Michael Li

Michael posts 20 shots from what looks like a new vantage for him, the SW corner, in a flicker set, including this of Toni finishing one of her two breakaways:

Click through for shots of tip-off, more action, and of Giants mascot Lou Seal interacting with fans.

Baranduin Briggs

Baranduin posts 72 shots to a smugmug gallery many telling what a scrappy, physical game this was, with bodies flying all over the place:

Click through for more toppling athletes, Lou Seal, and (#56) a moment of "pure Chiney" and (#66) Denia's personal fan club bares all.

Vanguard at Stanford, 3 Nov 2012

Not a lot of pics exposed at this game.

Baranduin Briggs

Baranduin posts 52 shots to a smugmug gallery with lots of action from the South end including this selection of first-half blocks:

And this nice shot of Denia working a held-ball call:

Dave Cortesi

We put a handful of shots in our smugmug gallery. Unable to find A.P. or other press photos, Marian used most of the best ones in her game story but not this of Sara shooting a three:

Friday, November 2, 2012

Corban at Stanford, 1 Nov 2012

Photographers turned out even for the first exhibition game.

Baranduin Briggs

Baranduin says she's still fiddling with white balance and focus, but posted 50 shots to a smugmug gallery including this of Sara James in mid-drive:

Click through for more action and team-goofing-around and fan shots.

Scott Uyeno

Scott shot as in the past from the North end and posted 38 pictures to his flickr set including this one of freshman Tess Picknell going for a block:

Dave Cortesi

We took advantage of the small crowd of an exhibition game to shoot from the floor seats, and posted a handful of shots to a smugmug gallery including Bonnie shooting one of her seven(!) treys.

And... We're Back!

Meet the Team

Click on this picture for a 2000-pixel-wide view of the whole team on the floor at the Red and White Scrimmage Friday night:

There were several people carrying serious-looking lenses at this event. Here are pics from two of them.

Baranduin Briggs

Baranduin posts 44 shots to a nice, fresh, newly initialized smugmug gallery with great shots of Betty Ann Boeving, of Roz G-O goofing with the coaches, of the dunk contest, but mostly of the players, like this one of Toni feeding Sara during the three-point contest:

and this of Chiney high-fiving the crowd:

Do click through to her gallery for the rest. Remember, we only tease you here. The good stuff is on our contributors' sites!

Dave Cortesi

Yr. Obt. Editor's shutter finger is definitely out of shape after a summer off. Out of 84 exposures we found eight that were, at least, in focus, and uploaded them to a smugmug gallery. Probably the best one being a nice head shot of Tess Picknell:

Synchronicity

Surprisingly often our shooters hit the button almost simultaneously. Here side by side are shots by moi and by Baranduin, of Denia trying to guard a Tinkle 3-point shot.

Couldn't have snapped more than 5 milliseconds apart! But, clearly I have to fiddle with my special Maples Pavilion white balance setting; my floor looks green by comparison to Baranduin's. Hey, it's all part of tuning up for the season, right?

The 2011-12 Fan Photo Book

The fan photo book is complete and available for preview and purchase at Blurb.com. Click this link to view the book page where you can preview all pages and purchase a copy.

Here is the front and back cover spread:

I regret to say that if you want to have a copy in time for the Awards dinner on the 18th (to get autographs in it, for example) you will have to order immediately and pay for premium shipping.

However, good news: you can buy the book as an e-book for $1.99. This gets you a file in epub format. Click here for a list of epub-reading apps for various platforms.

But then: bad news. When looking at the epub version in the free Mac App Kitabu, the book looks like crap. Fonts messed up, pictures disarranged—it's a mess.

The Firefox add-on EPubReader works better. It only shows one page at a time, so you can't appreciate double-page spreads, but at least the pictures are in the right size and order.

I'm going to leave the epub version enabled on the Blurb sale page, but be advised, it does not provide the same experience as the printed version. If you try it on an iPad, please leave a comment!

Stanford vs. Baylor, 02 April 2012

WATCH THIS SPACE!

A big announcement should be up here by the end of the weekTOMORROW!

David Cortesi

Well, the season's over and our page views are down to nuthin', but heck: posting 19 pictures of the Semifinal day to our last Smugmug gallery of the season. Shots of the reception, a few game shots (there were some highlights) but it's probably most fitting to represent the collection with this: Nneka speaking at some length to the team before they left the floor:

Michael Li

Micheal was in the Stanford section at the Pepsi Center and posts a few pictures to a Flickr set including his own shot of the end-of-season circle with a little more of the context than ours:

Baranduin Briggs

Baranduin collected her shots of Stanford-related activity from the whole Denver weekend to a single Smugmug gallery with lots of pictures of Nneka and Chiney at the announcement of the All-American team, charming pictures from the send-off, and some action shots from the Baylor game of which this is a sample:
